The Iron Footbridgewas erected in 1868-69 by a private company of citizens as a third bridge across the Main connecting the center of Frankfurt with Sachsenhausen. The other two bridges across the Main at that time were the centuries old Alte Bruecke (Old Bridge)customs tower (Rententurm) When the bridge opened in September 1869, and a railroad bridge (today's Friedensbruecke) that was begun in 1844. The bridge was for pedestrian use only as there was no space on the Frankfurt side to build access ramps for a road bridge. The Iron Bridge was re-worked in 1911. The bridge began on the Frankfurt river bank next to the sers had to pay a toll of one Kreuzer which was applied to the construction costs of 120,000 Florins. The toll was abolished when the city took over the bridge a short time later.
Excelente exemplo. A iniciativa privada, num quadro de direitos de propriedade, até pode construir vias públicas. Outro bom exemplo é o sistema de caminhos de ferro nos EUA, que era maioritariamente privado.
